Requirements

iPhone or iPad with iOS 15 or later. The Word of the day widget needs iOS 17 or later. The app’s interface is in English.

No sound, or “No Thai voice on this device”

Thai Flash speaks words with your device’s own Thai voice, so it needs one installed. Pronunciation, tone training and the listening stories all use it. If the app says there’s no Thai voice, add one:

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content in older versions of iOS).
  2. Tap Voices → Thai and download a voice. The Enhanced version sounds more natural.
  3. Go back to Thai Flash. If it still shows the notice, tap Check again.

On Android

Install the Thai voice data for Speech Services by Google in your phone’s text-to-speech settings.

Also check that your volume is up. To change the voice the app uses, go to Settings → Audio → Voice in Thai Flash.

The daily reminder

Turn it on in Settings → Daily reminder and allow notifications. It only arrives on days you haven’t practiced yet: finishing a session removes that day’s reminder. If it never arrives, check that notifications for Thai Flash are allowed in your device’s Settings → Notifications.

How reviews are scheduled

Every word has its own schedule for each direction (English → Thai, Thai → English, Listen). A word you know comes back after 1 day, then 3, 8, then about 20 days, and on. A word you miss comes back later in the same session, up to three times, and soon after. When words are due, a Review card at the top of the Decks screen starts one session with the due words of every deck. A word is mastered after three right answers in a row.

Adding your own words

  • One at a time: on the Decks screen, tap Add deck → Add your own words. They go into a “My words” deck.
  • A whole deck: tap Add deck → Import a file and pick a spreadsheet saved as CSV (UTF-8) or a JSON deck file. A CSV needs the columns en, th and phonetic, and can add example_th, example_phonetic, example_en, notes and tip. If the file has problems, the app lists them and imports nothing.

Tips, tone colors and the speaking check

  • Learning tips on the back of English → Thai cards: Settings → Sessions → Show tips.
  • Tone colors: Settings → Appearance → Tone colors.
  • Speaking check (optional): Settings → Sessions → Speaking check. It uses your phone’s speech recognition, which needs the network on most phones and can’t judge tones on its own.
  • Bigger text: Thai Flash follows your device’s text size (Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size).

Resetting your progress

Go to Settings → Reset progress. It clears word stats, session history, tone training and listening scores, and your streak; your settings are kept. The app asks first, and it can’t be undone.
