Thai tones, with examples
The five tones, how phonetic tone marks show them, and minimal pairs in color.
In everyday Thai, the day isn’t counted from 1 to 12 twice. It’s split into periods, each with its own word, and the hour is counted within the period: 8 p.m. is สองทุ่ม sǎwng tûm, “two drumbeats”. Here’s every period, every hour and the mix-ups to watch for.
Each period has its own word, said before or after the hour. Learn these seven and you can say any hour.
| Hours | Thai, and how it works |
|---|---|
| 1–5 a.m. | ตี…dtii …From 1 to 5 a.m., say ตี (dtii, “to strike”) and then the hour: ตีสอง is 2 a.m. |
| 6–11 a.m. | …โมงเช้า… mohng cháaoFrom 6 to 11 a.m., say the hour and then โมงเช้า (mohng cháao): แปดโมงเช้า is 8 a.m. |
| 12 p.m. | เที่ยงtîangNoon is เที่ยง (tîang). |
| 1–4 p.m. | บ่าย…โมงbàai … mohngFrom 1 to 4 p.m., say บ่าย (bàai, “afternoon”), the hour, then โมง: บ่ายสองโมง is 2 p.m. 1 p.m. is just บ่ายโมง. |
| 5–6 p.m. | …โมงเย็น… mohng yenAt 5 and 6 p.m., say the hour and then โมงเย็น (mohng yen): ห้าโมงเย็น is 5 p.m. |
| 7–11 p.m. | …ทุ่ม… tûmFrom 7 to 11 p.m., ทุ่ม (tûm, a drumbeat) counts again from one: หนึ่งทุ่ม is 7 p.m., สองทุ่ม is 8 p.m. |
| 12 a.m. | เที่ยงคืนtîang-kuenMidnight is เที่ยงคืน (tîang-kuen): เที่ยง “noon” + คืน “night”. |
The 24-hour clock exists in Thai too, but it’s mostly heard on the radio and in timetables. In everyday speech, people use the periods above.
The whole day, hour by hour. Notice how the count starts again in each period: หนึ่งทุ่ม nùeng tûm is 7 p.m. and สองทุ่ม sǎwng tûm is 8 p.m.

Morning and early eveningBetween 6:30 and 11:30 a.m., and at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., people usually drop เช้า and เย็น from the half hour, so เจ็ดโมงครึ่ง could be morning or evening. The situation tells you which, and Thai Flash’s drill leaves these out.
