Thai numbers and prices

Hearing a price is one of the most useful skills in Thailand. Thai says each digit with its place word, biggest first: สามร้อยห้าสิบ sǎam-rói-hâa-sìp, “three hundred five ten”, is 350. Here are the digits, the place words, the few rules that cover everything else, and the mix-ups to watch for.

Place words, up to a million

Thai has a word for each place, up to a million. Unlike English, 10,000 and 100,000 have words of their own, so 35,000 is “three ten-thousands five thousands”: สามหมื่นห้าพัน sǎam-mùen-hâa-pan.

The rules

Say each digit with its place word, biggest first. A handful of twists cover everything else.

Digit, then place

Say each digit with its place word, biggest first: สามร้อยห้าสิบ (sǎam-rói-hâa-sìp) is 3 hundreds and 5 tens, 350.

Examples: digit, then place
NumberThai
350สามร้อยห้าสิบsǎam-rói-hâa-sìp
530ห้าร้อยสามสิบhâa-rói-sǎam-sìp

Ten

10 is just สิบ (sìp), not หนึ่งสิบ: สิบห้า (sìp-hâa) is 15.

Examples: ten
NumberThai
10สิบsìp
15สิบห้าsìp-hâa

Twenty

20 is ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp), not สองสิบ: ยี่สิบห้า (yîi-sìp-hâa) is 25. Don’t mix it up with สิบสอง (sìp-sǎwng), 12.

Examples: twenty
NumberThai
20ยี่สิบyîi-sìp
25ยี่สิบห้าyîi-sìp-hâa

A final one

A final 1 after tens or more is เอ็ด (èt), not หนึ่ง: สิบเอ็ด is 11, ยี่สิบเอ็ด is 21, หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด is 101.

Examples: a final one
NumberThai
11สิบเอ็ดsìp-èt
21ยี่สิบเอ็ดyîi-sìp-èt
101หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ดnùeng-rói-ètAlso ร้อยเอ็ด rói-èt
1,001หนึ่งพันเอ็ดnùeng-pan-ètAlso พันเอ็ด pan-èt

Empty places

Empty places are skipped, with no word for the zero: หนึ่งพันห้าสิบ (nùeng-pan-hâa-sìp) is 1,050.

Examples: empty places

1,050หนึ่งพันห้าสิบnùeng-pan-hâa-sìpAlso พันห้าสิบ pan-hâa-sìp

หนึ่ง before ร้อย or พัน is often dropped: ร้อยห้าสิบ (rói-hâa-sìp) is 150, like หนึ่งร้อยห้าสิบ.

Examples: one hundred, one thousand

At the market you’ll often hear the shorter forms: ร้อยห้าสิบ rather than หนึ่งร้อยห้าสิบ for 150, and พันห้า for 1,500.

Numbers that are easy to mix up

  • 20 and 12. ยี่สิบ yîi-sìp is 20, สิบสอง sìp-sǎwng is 12. The same pair hides in bigger numbers: ร้อยยี่สิบ is 120, ร้อยสิบสอง is 112.
  • A power of ten out. สามร้อยห้าสิบ sǎam-rói-hâa-sìp is 350; สามพันห้าร้อย is 3,500 and สามสิบห้า is 35. Listen for the place word after the first digit.
  • The same digits in another order. 350 is สามร้อยห้าสิบ; 530 is ห้าร้อยสามสิบ.
  • Short forms. สองพันห้า sǎwng-pan-hâa is 2,005 in full, but in everyday speech it means 2,500, the short form of สองพันห้าร้อย. Thai Flash’s drill leaves numbers like these out.
